Iranian Against the Government Implicated in July 2009 Protests Granted Refugee Status

Publish Date: Oct 03, 2013

In the course of our immigration law practice we acted for an Iranian who was implicated in the July 2009 protests and was persecuted by the Basij for being against the government.

Our client was accused of creating security problems in Iran and spying for foreign governments. The Basij charged him with promoting revolution against the government through the July 2009 protests among his friends and the wider community in Iran.

The authorities saw him as opposed to the outcome of the July 2009 Presidential elections. He was told not to leave Iran and faced a lengthy term in prison. He was forced to flee from the Basij and Sepah for his political opinions and being against the government.

Through taking detailed instructions from our client we demonstrated that he had suffered persecution following the July 2009 protests and was viewed as against the government by the Basij.

If he were to return to Iran he would have been detained by the Basij for leaving illegally. Through research we managed to demonstrate that political dissidents in Iran, those involved in the July 2009 protests against the government and anyone opposed to the outcome of the Presidential election are routinely targeted by the authorities in Iran. Those who participate in rallies face long terms in prison.

The review authority accepted our claims and our client was granted refugee status.
